Hi, I have just been informed that I will be relocating from Jeddah to Dhahran as soon as a house is available. I hear some houses in "Disneyworld" have fibre to the home and some only have ADSL. Can anyone tell me what typical download speeds are for both these services. Is it possible to get the fibre optic connection installed if the house does not have it?
Thanks

Only 1000 houses in the Dhahran Hills have FTTH. They are not installing any more FTTH as I was made to understand that even with the 1000 houses where the laid the fibre optics, the contracting issues were numerous. The fibre optic was installed to free the ADSL ports as the waiting list was super long.
The speed that I got from speedtest.net was 21.5Mbps Download and 1 Mbps upload for FTTH.
You will not be able to install it on your own. You can only have FTTH if the house you occupy already has the fibre AND and the box installed in the gae.

Thanks azraeil, 21Mbps sounds pretty decent, just hope I drop lucky. with the housing allocation. I did look into the Wimax and LTE services offered by Mobily and STC respectively these are the new 4G wireless technology and are supposdly capable of speeds up to 40Mbps over a 30 mile radius of the antenna. However the Mobily offering quotes a lacklustre 2.5Mbps and I am not sure what the STC product delivers as I seem unable to find an STC salesman who knows what it is.
Cheers, ridgeway.

Ridgeway;
Don't bother chasing up STC, I looked into this as well as I wanted to get rid of my Aramco broadband (max download about 1.5Mbps and about 0.4Mbps) 'cos my slingbox doesnt work on the Aramco system for some reason.
However both Mobily & STC - at Al-Midra - have told me that their 21Mbps (Mobily) & 42Mbps (STC) service is not available in Dhahran.

Wow, what I'd do to have 21Mbps again, like we had in Houston.
We're in the Hills and our Aramco DSL is 2.1 Mbps down, 0.3 Mbps up. In addition, I have all our devices (iPads, 3G dongle, iPhones) sharing the same Mobily unlimited wireless data plan and at my house I get 2.4 Mbps down and 0.7 Mbps up. However, YMMV as in some parts of the Hills there is no covee at all!

Mobily's covee is poor at best in my house. Thought it was the iPhone's famous poor reception as the case but turns out that it was Mobily ...

Luck if I get 300k upload in my Jeddah compound it's usally around dial up speed when the brats are Friendfacing.
Glimmer of hope (maybe) I read 4G LTE and Wimax services were launched in KSA last week by STC, Mobily and Zain. They claim that 4G is capable of up to 150 Mbps over wireless... I suspect that is a burst rate but if it delivered 10% of that sustained its pretty impressive. No idea on price and the STC shop assistant in one of the local malls looked at me blankly last week when I enquired. Supposedly LTE /Wimax transmitters have a range of about 30 km and Ryhad, Jeddah and Dammam are getting it first (well supposed to have it already). Now I an;t been here that long but somehow I don't feel that optimistic. Not seen any LTE/Wimax modems on offer either.

o All,
I have checked the speed using speed.net and the results are, I have FTTH;
Download- 21.49 Mbps Upload - 1.07 Mbps
I think speed alo depends upon the location of the house as well.
Regards, Engr

Thanks Engr70 Those are the sort of speeds I was hoping for. Now I am just hoping I get a house in DH which has FTTH (but I some how doubt I will).
I am still watching how the 4G LTE/Wimax launch unfolds. Considering how massive an advance it is (the UK isn't getting it till 2013), I really would have thought it would have been higher profile. The Bill boards in Jeddah are full of adverts for it but getting any actual usuefull info on it is proving a little difficult. I am going to take one of the young Saudis I work with to interpret this week as he's interested in getting it too. Will update when I have more.
