I know a few people here have them and they love being able to get their tv channels from back home. You would need to maintain a high speed connection back home. I watched a couple of movies at a friends house and I think our internet here was the limiting factor. The newer box (Slingbox PRO-HD) requires a pretty high speed connection on both ends to get good HD signal. check their website for more details: www.slingbox.com/go/slingbox-prohd

The screen quality is only good for a small screen like a computer so if you want to hook it up to your big tv it is not good. We have a vpn and have a computer hooked up to the large tv. It allows us to get all the major U.S. networks like CBS, NBC & ABC. Netflix and Hulu are also available. We have found it works better for us. If you are going to just be using it on your computer you should be fine.

I have one hooked up here and connected to my Tivo back in the US. Works great, but then I am one of the lucky ones with fiber-to-the-home here in Dhahran.

Dhahran as the new high speed broadband lines, it might work well with them.
For those of us in the other camps it could be tough. I have the Aramco DSL and streaming movies/TV shows doesnt work, its very very choppy. During off times it seems to work ok, but the freeway just isnt large enough and during peak times there's simply a traffic jam (my ping ranges from 100sh to 1500sh depending on the time of day and the sight).
Hopefully we'll find an alternative to the DSL provided, but in the meantime its mainly good for 1-2 people surfing the net or 1 person gaming, any more than that and you can expect a bottleneck.

I have a slingbox (and slingcatcher), but for some reason my slingbox does not work on the Aramco broadband, it does work if i use a (Mobily or STC) USB mobile broadband connection

Did you remove the proxy settings? We do not need to input the proxy anymore for our Internet connection.

Ok, you got me there, what are the proxy settings? :?
It worked - intermittently - up to about 5/6 months ago and then just gave up the ghost

Previously we were required to set a proxy for our internet connection but now, it's not required. Under internet options --> connections you should see if you have a proxy set-up. Try and remove anything that has to do with proxy (previously it should be something like proxy.saramco.net with port 80). Now this setup is not required

Hey Sling, I'm not in Saudi yet but I am going to use a VPS which apparently has to be set up outside of Saudi. So either you do it when you're back home or get a friend to do it for you. I wondered if you'd happen to know whether or not the flats - I'm only a secretary and don't get a house - have land lines in them? Otherwise I'm not sure how I'd get an outside broadband service unless there are cable systems on the compound in Dhahran.... W

You can set up your VPS in the Kingdom...just a matter of going to a website and purchasing it.
