Well, the car didn't arrive on that date previously agreed, as the ship was allegedly "full" departing Houston. But after a four week delay all else went fine--the car was dusty but otherwise in exactly the condition I left it in Houston. Total cost, including shipping, duties, port fees, fees to the "standardization office," inspection, license plates and registration, $3.3k. Comprehensive insurance for a year, another $1k.
Best thing to do is pay someone else to handle all of the paperwork for you when it arrives, unless you speak Arabic, find driving around the port of Dammam to be a joy, and like standing in lines and filling out forms. PM me and I can send anyone who asks the details for the guy who helped me out.
Addendum: Since front license plates are required, make sure you have the appropriate front mounting bracket for your car, and make sure whover is handling the process mounts the permanent plates for you. You will save yourself a heap of aggravation--long story I won't go into here.

You've probably already been there, but if not, here is the official Saudi Customs page regarding importation of autos. The issue of car age is addressed, however "antique" is not defined. www.customs.gov.sa/CustomsNew/ru ... oms%20Duty The following blog offers guidance about age of vehicles. www.squidoo.com/cars-saudi-arabi ... and-follow "Based on a report, the Saudi Arabia Customs informed the public that effective June 2009 used cars of five years old or lees are the only ones that can be imported into the country, whether in dry containers, in open top containers or loose ones. However, adventure cars of more than 30 years of age are an exception and can be eventually accepted, as long as the owner of the antic car can provide all necessary documents of the said vehicle."There is a "contact us" option at the Saudi Customs web site. If it were me, I'd send a specific question to them directly.
