Since you said Compound(s), ill throw in a few in khobar that we recently discovered. I asked my Saudi co-workers where to go for the best Shawarma. They recommended the place immediately around the corner from Zamals in the corniche. I was surprised to find that I couldnt bring my family inside(men only) but its not really meant to be a sit and eat place anyway. The owner took me aside to explain the menu to me in english and recommended the chicken Shawarma with a side of Garlic sauce and french fries. Wow, even my kids liked it! Anytime my spouse and kids take to something ethnic is a big win in my book. Even if you have to eat it in the car.
Some friends took us to their favorite place in the Corniche last week called The Steak House. Lots of family seating upstairs with an impressive kids area. By impressive, I mean arcades and other games behind giant sound proof windows. All in plane view of the tables at a nicer sit down family restaurant. People get hooked on their lettuce wraps. It's more like a lettuce wrap platter with different dips and a bunch of options to load up your wrap. The chicken is dipped in a tasty peanut sauce. Their bread/sandwiches are supposed to be pretty good too. The pot roast I had was pretty decent. Our friends really liked the meatloaf. The waiters were really great. The house Stake Sauce tasted exactly like A1. Salad bar didn't look that great though.
We haven't tried Modern Rakah yet, but our neighbors with lots of kids order delivery from there often and they deliver to the Rakah compound.

Near RT not a great deal for families to choose from....pizza hut, little caesers, Gulf Chinese and East West Indian is about it.
Khobar/Dammam/Dhahran has almost everything you could think of. A lot of American chains, steak houses, Italians, sushi, Arabic, Indian etc etc
Look for Eastern Province Foodies group on Facebook
