Not sure what you mean by 'have you gone through this process'. I can say we're back in the US although not in CA.

CA is one of about a dozen states that will chase you wherever you go unless you plan things properly. Meaning, do not leave any connection to that state including cancelling your driver's license, sell your house, don't rent it out, cancel bank accounts you have with them and open online accounts with addresses in friendlier states (PO boxes, relatives...etc), don't plan on returning. Google what is the best way to completely cut ties with CA and there are some excellent guides out there.

This is an interesting conversation that I have never considered.
Taxes for Expats suggest that these 9 states are the best to have connections with when living overseas: Wyoming Washington Texas South Dakota Nevada Florida Alaska Tennessee New Hampshire
The worst 4 are: New Mexico Virginia South Carolina California
The rest are "neutral" meaning you just have to prove overseas residency.
