Hi,
We are due to relocate in the next few months. Given the somewhat different climates of Eastern Province, KSA and London, UK my wife is trying to find suitable clothing.
Off compound, she will be wearing an abaya so there's no issue there. However, we have a question about acceptability "on-compound" which is not entirely covered in the material we have seen so far.
Due to the heavy sun, she would prefer tops with longer sleeves. However, every clothes shop here (London, UK) when offering reasonably thin clothes with long sleeves seems to have an obsession for transparency. So, my question is this : what level of transparency (if any) of tops on camp is permissible. Don't get me wrong, we are not chasing this to ridiculousness but just anxious to avoid causing offence.
Alternatively, what are the local options for clothes purchase that fit the expectations of compound life?

Anything transparent won't offer UV protection - suggest she tries cotton shirts if it is shelter from the sun she is seeking.

For men and women:
The best shirts I have found here for the hot weather is Columbia Sportswear. They have the Omni Shade material - great for sun block. But their newest material is Omni Freeze - Zero feels cool in the heat.
I find it does feel cool. You can get them at Sun, Sand and Sports here and in Bahrain and probably in a sports store near you.
Their pants are way cooler than jeans in the heat.
You do not see many transparent blouses on women here on camp. Short sleeve and sleeveless - yes.

Within the compound, anything your wife feels comfortable in is suitable. I find knee length linen skirts and cotton t shirts to be ideal. I play a lot of sports, so am often running around in bermuda shorts with long-sleeved golf shirts, which keep off the sun but are cool to wear. Hat and sunglasses are really necessary in the summer months.
The omni-shade products mentioned earlier are very good. I use them at the beach. I have a pair of black loose pants in an engineered fabric, and I wear them with a loose black or purple tunic off-camp since I don't own an abaya.
One think I'd point out for sun protection is that I bring in with me moisturizing cream that includes SPF 15 sunblock in huge pump-top containers. Every day, out of the shower, I put it on arms, legs, neck, hands, face, feet (we wear sandals here!) as a "base" of sun protection. Then I get dressed in whatever I am wearing. The sheer tops you mention do not block the sun at all.
