Is the SMP background check sufficient if made direct

I would like to know if the background check conducted on SMP employees is sufficient for the requirement of a background check? From my understanding it is the same UK based company that conducts the background check. I would assume that the check would become irrelevant if it where the same company conducting the check, unless they would want to verify something related to employment with the SMP company.
