First off: great useful information all (especially vpainter). I have found almost everything I need to know before heading out that way.
I have received an offer and waiting for BI and whatnot, but it looks like the wife is not going to come out with me. Maybe once I get the lay of the land she might change her mind. So, consequently, I have gotten ASC to change the offer to bachelor status, but now I realize I will be in a one bedroom flat.
I have found floor plans for the typical 2 and 3 bed houses (2TA3S, 3DW3F, 3TG3S, 3TR3S, 3TS3S) but I can't seem to find any plans on the 1 bedroom townhouse or apts. Can anyone provide a link?
I should add that my GC will be 14 if that makes a difference, but I didn't want specifics anyway, just the "typical" floor plans for 1 BR flats.

Take what Saudi Aramco or Aramco Services tells you about housing with a grain of salt. I am a longtime Aramco employee and am within 9 days of leaving for KSA. Even though I was repeatedly assured I would be housed in Dhahran (I will work in Dhahran) I received a phone call from ASC today telling me I had to choose between Abqaiq or Ras Tanura. No specifics about the size of the accommodations, etc., I just had to choose. Talk about throwing a curve ball at the 11 hour. Puts me in a bind with my shipment that is already gone and now I have to rely on the bus for work, shopping, and having a social life (Everyone I know lives in DHA). I'm trying to get someone with enough wasta to help with my plight but I'm not holding my breath.

You have to remember housing units are only assigned after all clearances are complete and it is almost time to depart since that is when they know you are coming. They do not hold units for months and months waiting for all these things to happen since candidates may drop-out along the way. Once all that is done, the units may be full. Right now, DH is full. For singles and bachelors they are offering housing in ABQ or RT. In ABQ you can get a 700 sq foot unit, in RT you will be housed in a 400 sq ft studio. There are many here in RT commuting daily and most all new arrivals. The housing shortage will ease once more families move to the new compound and more units are available in the new housing area in DH.

I understand they don't hold housing but at the same time what I was told and what was agreed to is being changed at the last minute. I am also skeptical about there is no space within DHA. The same thing was being said when I did a long-term assignment a couple years back. There were quite a few places sitting empty.
Do you have additional information on the studio apartments in RT such as the location(s), where/when the bus leaves from, etc?

There have to be places always empty for emergency purposes, example: a neighbor of ours had a house fire, that displaced 4 families/singles. They all had to have a place to go live until repairs were completed.

A few years ago RT was about at 20% capacity and now its at 100%. We are housing a large number of people from Dhahran. It seems unlikely that Aramco would force families to live in RT when there are houses empty in Dhahran. What purpose would that serve? Aramco wants to bring people here and make their life difficult by forcing the to commute? I think they have other things to do. When all the new houses are built, most people will be transferred to their work locations - some choose to stay here in RT because its a nice place to be on the gulf, its a very different camp than DH. Yes, some houses are empty for emergencies and different grade codes get different houses. Also houses need to be renovated so they may be empty waiting for renovations. Here they are gut rehabbing some houses (not just painting) so no one can live there during rennovation. If they studios are not full (they are nearing capacity now) you would be housed by the medical center on palm drive. The bus stops in front of the bldg. at 5:40am. That building is full of single males commuting to Dhahran. It was almost empty about 2 months ago.

Just had same thing happen to me - choice of RT or ABQ after all this time. I know there is not ill-will meant by this last minute change. But for situations like these shouldn't we get special consideration once we get there? For instance, not having to wait the 2 years to change housing and be at the top of the list when new housing comes available?

Is there ill-will meant in their last minute change in accommodations? No. Is there a disconnect between Saudi Aramco and Aramco Services. Yes. What bothers me most is that trying to get additional information is like pulling teeth. Hopefully it gets better. See you at the bus stop in RT.
