Good evening, Now that I've finally figured out what dish barrel boxes are and have actually found a few. I have a question for recent arrivals from the US who have employed dish barrel boxes as some of the their checked baggage. My question is do you wait until you get to the airport to tape the boxes shut. I can see where some TSA robot will do there best to cut open the boxes thereby spilling the contents and not re sealing the box and now you contents are strewn about the airport. Any advice on this?
Thanks Ben

We fly out of DFW and have never had a problem with customs spilling everything out of the boxes. They do open and reseal them, testing them with their little swabs. Their customs' tape lets you know they did open the box. Their retaping has always held up. We always seal them prior to going to the airport. They do not always open them.
But that is at DFw.

We arrived a week ago but still don't have Internet access at home hence the radio silence from my wife and I. So far the experience has been very good largely due to the advice and helpful hints given on this forum. We are I quite pleased with our decision to make the move over. Having said that, there are issues that have arisen (eg lack of Internet / Sap access) but these are minor in the bigger scheme of things. To answer your question re dish barrels, we took a roll of packing tape with us to the airport just in case they did decide to open the boxes. They did not ( they put them thru the X-ray machine in the oversized luggage area). Nevertheless, we did use the tape to reinforceall the handle areas as one of them ripped as we picked up the box (it was right at the 70 lb weight limit). In the end, all made it to Dhahran without incident. We also brought our dog with us and because we had all the paperwork done ahead of time, had no issues with her entry at all. The customs officer only wanted to see the import permit (which I had printed off using my colour printer before we left) and waved us right through. For those of you traveling with small children, hopefully, you will have an immigration officer as understanding as ours. When they saw my wife and daughter waiting in line with me, they opened up a new line for us and another family. We were through in 20 minutes and actually beat the taxi cab and Aramco rep to the lounge where we got our temp id's. As mentioned, we still don't have Internet so I will post sporadic updates on our experiences. So far though its been mostly positive

We arrived on the 1st. We had 6 dish barrel boxes. I taped them very well at home. When we got to dammam two had been inspected because they were re-sealed with their tape, but none of our boxes busted. I also brought a roll of tape and a utility knife in one of our suitcases just in case. We flew united/Lufthansa. At the united counter, we just gave them the boxes, we didn't have to take them to the screening area.
Gbhatia - we had Internet the third day we were here. My husband's coworker took him off camp and he bought some portable thing with a SIM card. He also hooked up the magicjack. When he gets his iqama we'll get the better Internet. I hope you get access soon.

My and family ( seprately) came with dish barrel boxes with no problem. We used big trash bags to secure contents before dumping them in DB boxes.

just a point about the move and packing. The typical issue when packing, especially the e-boxes is less about weight but volume. Although they allow 400 lbs per box, what you can actually ship is limited by the physical size of the boxes. we were advised by someone at orientation to go out and buy those "spacesaver" bags for packing stuff like towels, clothing, duvets, pillows, and other "fluffy" stuff that we wanted shipped in the ebox. We were somewhat skeptical about the potential space saving but we bought one pack f'rom one of those "As seen on tv stores" in the mall. We were so surprised at the savings in space that i went out and bought another 2. It really was incredib'e as to jow much mpre stuff ypu can cram into an ebox using them. Despite that,we were still under weight by almost 150 lbs so I wish I'd used it even more.

GBhatia, thanks for the tips. We bought several spacesaver bags at Bath Bed & Beyond, and will likely buy more...

I did do a search but it happens that searches turn empty although I know there should be results.
