ADSL Speed

Postby cook14 on Sat Jan 09, 2010 5:12 am

Hello

I have some scripts that use yahoo to download financial information. While in the UK I was able to download the information in approx 1 hr. I'm livining in the hills (and using dsl) and have to kill the program because after 18+ hours its only completed 1/3 of the downloads. Its posting ichart.yahoo..... commands with additional parameters, but pretty simple http commands overall...

Any ideas as to why this is so slow. Skype runs fine.

Thanks

Sorry cook, but I'm not exactly sure what it is you're trying to download. It seems like it might be bandwidth intensive. If you're on a basic dsl connection, it might be affected by other users bandwidth consumption. If everyone is downloading lots of stuff, I would think that might slow the system down. Any computer people on here know what cook is talking about?

Found the problem. The DNS addresses on the router weren't set to the correct servers. The download speeds are good !! Usually IT sets these values when the installation is performed. I had set them using an old instruction sheet.

OK then your DNS requests were timing out before you hit a good DNS server. Makes sense that this would cause serious issues with your scripts.

DNS servers shouldn't influence download speed, except maybe if many urls need to be resolved, and the problem was there somewhere.
